Psychotherapy actually means "soul servant" and describes my purpose in restoring couples to new love. As a mother of three adult children, I have been married 27 yrs., minus 3 we were divorced! I focus therapy on becoming your true self vs. your false self, leading to authentic relating. As defenses fall away, you are both free to accept, trust, forgive, and assert healthy boundaries. We explore old wounds in new ways and let go of self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. As you change, others change.
Karis Counseling, meaning "grace", emphasizes the need for acceptance of each other's strengths and weaknesses. Only unconditional love shatters shame, the root of all addictions and self-destructive behavior. The art of loving unconditionally happens as you grow to understand that you are unconditionally loved. Your spirit can become a source of extravagant love as your sense of self is restored. Passionate relating and sex are realized in a warm atmosphere of mutual respect and love.
Issues explored include core value differences, male/female differences, conflict resolution, blended families, self-esteem, anger, depression/anxiety, surviving affairs, and codependence. Family sessions with adolescents provide help with boundaries, academic problems, substance abuse, social skills, and adjustment. Healing teens involves healing the family system. Adolescents need the safety of intervention by their parents.
I treat women's issues including self-injury, depression/anxiety, recovery from addictions and abusive relationships, low self-esteem, single parenting, blended families, and career adjustment. New confidence results as we explore clients' unique stories of losses and disappointments. Life skills develop a stronger sense of self in reaching out to new relationship and renewing old ones.
Exploring your story is critical in healing from hurtful life events. Encouragement is key in the process. Therapy is relaxed, interactive, and solution-focused. I use an integrative approach including cognitive behavioral, family systems, and christian counseling principles. Spirituality is included in sessions at your request. Journaling, reading, and referrals to physicians may be part of the multi-modal approach for your overall well-being. Goals are generated together at the first session, and you may request changes in treatment or opt out of any technique. Sessions are 50 minutes. Weekly visits average 5-10 sessions and may extend as long as you desire. Spouses are also seen individually. Studies show therapy is 90% more effective when working together.
