When partnerships are working, couples tend to feel a sense of safety, trust and intimacy. If this foundation of support is damaged, people often feel confused and distressed as they struggle with frequent arguments, emotional and physical distancing, anger, resentment, loneliness and exhaustion. Couples counseling offers a way to make sense of what is confusing, decrease distress and increase the positive qualities that all of us seek in relationships.
In my work with couples, we look beyond surface issues ("I want help with the laundry") to more foundational relationship needs ("I need to feel supported by you"). This immediately shifts from a problem focus toward what is desired. In an environment that allows each person self-expression, couples begin to:
• Identify how they currently attempt to meet needs
• Notice when they miss opportunities to connect with one another
• Replace negative patterns with more effective approaches
While changing habits and increasing personal and relational accountability is challenging, the rewards can include increased self-knowledge, greater flexibility and more options when responding to each other, and a closer, more pleasurable relationship.
It is an honor and a joy to accompany couples as they progress towards achieving their relationship goals. I bring a deep faith in the counseling process, warmth, support, honesty, and gentle humor.
