San Diego, CA Marriage & Family Counselor
Lena Washburn, MA, MFTI
Personal Statement
I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern, and have been in practice for the past 2 years. My theoretical approach is eclectic, which means that I draw from a number of theoretical influences, including Carl Jung, Bowen family therapy, attachment theory, humanistic theories, and research and theory on trauma. These influences enhance my own ideas about human psychology, behavior and the process of change.

I believe that life is about learning and evolving; therefore, as a therapist, I focus on personal growth and self-awareness. Two of the main questions I pose to any client are: “What can you learn about yourself from the experience you are having and how can you use that insight to drive your life forward?” I would encourage you to recognize unhelpful patterns in your life and empower yourself by developing the courage to change them. My therapeutic style is flexible and based on the needs of the client; you will set the pace of sessions based on how much content and emotion you can tolerate. Depending on what you prefer, we can develop a specific strategy for reaching your goals, or just be open to how the process develops naturally.

As a therapist, I am involved and directive, but I always believe in full collaboration with the client, because you are ultimately the expert on your own life. I will not assume that I know what is best for you nor will I set an agenda for how you ought to live your life; at the same time, I will be upfront with you about how I assess your situation based on what you tell me. You are always free to disagree with me without any judgment on my part. I frequently apply unconventional therapeutic approaches that do not involve judging, shaming, pathologizing, or patronizing the client. One of my beliefs is that people are doing the best they can, given their resources and limitations at that time; therefore, I strive to empower my clients and ask them to acknowledge their strengths, instead of focusing on what is not working.

My specialties include all types of relationships; anxiety & trauma (including relationship trauma, such as infidelity and domestic violence); depression and low self-esteem; spirituality; military issues (including military family); grief & loss of any kind (including divorce); cultural/immigration issues; addictions; sexuality; and emotional management.
