Couples therapy is the focus of my practice and has been my specialty for over 20 years. My clients would say that I'm gentle yet direct, and easy to talk with. I can readily understand the perspective of both partners, and will formulate a third encompassing perspective that gives direction to resolving conflict, renewing friendship, and building intimacy. Over the years I have gained expertise in several effective methods of marital therapy and can customize an approach for your situation. I have been a Clinical member of AAMFT since 1993. Clinical members have met the highest standards of the profession.
When couples have differences they often encounter their stress-related tendency to either pursue/attack or withdraw/defend. These "fight or flight" responses make it difficult to resolve differences and sustain intimacy. I teach couples how to calm these defenses so they can hear and respond to one another's underlying needs. With this kind of emotional safety, new possibilities for resolution appear.
Problems I can help couples with include communication, conflict and resentment, drifting apart and affair recovery. I often help couples with challenges they face in parenting together, as well as with money, sex, and relating to one another's families. I help couples who are in crisis as well as those who are trying to solve longstanding patterns of relating. I enjoy helping couples balance factors as diverse as work and family, togetherness and separateness, autonomy and control, closeness and distance. I often help individuals with anger, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and low self-esteem to the extent that these arise from their couple difficulties. First and foremost, I help couples reestablish an emotional bond, without which no amount of communication savvy can make a marriage work.
I welcome you to call or email me with any questions you may have. I'd like to help you find that place where you can meet "in the middle" to create a satisfying and fulfilling life together.
