The highest predictor of success in therapy is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. It's important to find someone you like and trust, so you feel comfortable talking about personal (sometimes uncomfortable) aspects of your life. It helps to know that the therapist understands your experiences and feelings and doesn't judge you. If you're looking for couple's therapy, it's also important to know that the therapist is not going to take sides.
This is why I strongly recommend all my new clients to go shopping. Talk to two or three therapists - at least on the phone - before choosing the best fit for you. Ask questions about the therapist's experience with similar problems and their success rate. Notice what it feels like to have a conversation with this person. Are you comfortable? Is it easy to open up to this person?
